Welcome to Kay's Reader's Club for October!
What a month it’s been! I released the third book in my Hitman’s Heart series, Hitman’s Honeymoon. Yay! I finally got Rylee and Connor to the altar, and it wasn’t easy. If you’ve read the first two books, you know exactly what I mean.
My husband and I celebrated with a ten-day road trip through Boston, New York, and Maine. We ate fabulous food, saw great art, met interesting people, and immersed ourselves in nature. That last part was harder than you might expect. Bar Harbor has changed a lot since my last visit forty-five years ago. Still, I came home with plenty of inspiration for future characters, settings, and plots.
I also spent time working on The Devil We Face. A big thank-you to everyone who has already preordered it. The book doesn’t come out until February, so your faith in me means a great deal.
I hope you enjoyed The Devil Before, the short story I wrote especially for Kay’s Readers Club. I’m expanding it into a prequel novella that will include River’s first arrival at the Palace, her early relationship with Cruz, and why she left. So many of you have asked what they were like when they first met—and what Cruz was like before he became the man you know.
When I wrote The Devil You Know, I had no idea that a 40,000-word novella would become my most successful book. I gave you very little of Cruz and River’s history together. The Devil Before will fill in those gaps.
My goal is to have both The Devil Before and The Devil We Face ready for a double release in February. Yes, I am certifiably crazy, and I hope I can pull it off.
I swear I’m not starting anything else this year until I finish these two books.
✍️ This Month at My Desk 📖 Current projects: Two: The Devil We Face and The Devil Before. ☕ Coffee consumed: I stopped counting. I’ve added green maté to my drink list, though, so the coffee count is down. 🎯 Current goal: Slow down and smell the roses. Make that sunflowers! I spotted these beauties pictured above behind a Wawa in Pennsylvania while we were charging our Tesla. They belong to Windy Springs Farm, close to home.

Character in the Spotlight: Damian
This month, I’ve been spending a lot of time with Damian, Cruz’s half-brother and the main male character in The Devil We Face. He lived under Montel MacKenzie’s thumb from the age of thirteen until twenty-one, when Montel was arrested. Like Cruz before him, Damian has broken away from his father, but breaking free of his influence is another matter. He’s morally grey—perhaps even more so than Cruz, having spent his formative teenage years under Montel’s tutelage.
Damian must decide whether he truly wants a different life—or whether he wants to become the very man he escaped. He is also panromantic and pansexual, capable of romantic and sexual attraction to people of any gender. His desires, troubled past, and struggle over who he wants to become make him a compelling character to write.
😈 Secrets from the Devil Chronicles
Every month, when I’m not participating in a BookFunnel giveaway, I offer something exclusive to Kay’s Readers Club. This month, it’s a copy of the Palace’s House Rules. They’re mentioned throughout The Devil Chronicles, and now you can read them for yourself—and sign on the dotted line. Ha!
Why did Cruz need House Rules? He wanted to bring order to the house and give everyone a clear understanding of what was expected. Most of his people appreciated them. Except, of course, the ones who broke them.
Download your copy and discover how Cruz kept order at the Palace.

Notes from the What Do Romance Authors Think About
Writing is often solitary, but storytelling is a collective experience. Fellow writers, the world needs the stories only you can tell.
